Visa Application Tracking: Milestones Are Yours, the Status Is Theirs

The comparison pages for visa tracking apps set two products against each other and score alerts, analytics and support. The comparison that actually decides whether tracking works is a different one: the official portal that holds your application's status, against every third-party tracker that re-displays it. They are not rivals. They see different things, and only one of them sees the case.

Side one: the official portal

For a US nonimmigrant application the status lives in CEAC, the State Department's own system; for most e-visas it lives in the destination government's portal where you applied. This is the only place a decision, a document request or an interview instruction truly appears. It is also deliberately thin: a status line, sometimes a date, no explanation, no prediction. Coverage is total and insight is minimal, and no account with any other service changes that.

Side two: the tracker apps

Products like Torly and the Case Tracker apps earn their place on top of the portal, not instead of it. Case Tracker polls USCIS and NVC receipt numbers and pushes an alert when the status line changes, which saves manual checking across a long wait. Torly layers deadline tracking and document organization over specific routes such as the UK Innovator visa. On the dimensions the comparison pages use, the honest scoring is: coverage, only the case types each app supports; alerts, genuinely useful, and the real product; analytics, timelines estimated from other users' cases, helpful for expectations and worth nothing as a forecast of yours; price, justified only if the alerts save you real checking time.

The milestones neither side can see

Applicants ask for real-time milestone tracking, and the milestones inside a consulate, adjudication queues, officer assignment, background-check stages, are not published by any government at any price. What can be tracked in real time is the other set of milestones: yours. Documents gathered, forms completed, fees paid, expiry dates approaching on the passport and the visa itself. That is a checklist and calendar problem, and it is where tracking tools honestly deliver: our guide to tracker apps scores them on exactly that, and the document organizer roundup covers the storage half.

Choose in this order: bookmark the official portal and learn its status vocabulary first; add a tracker app only if your case type is one it actually polls and the wait is long enough for alerts to matter; and keep your own milestone list somewhere you control, because that half of the tracking was always yours.
